Refractive surgery is a treatment that corrects problems such as myopia, hyperopia and/or astigmatism. Sometimes this treatment requires a second operation to correct residual refractive errors. This second intervention is also called retouching and can be performed with techniques such as LASIK or PRK.
In order to choose the most suitable technique, we carry out a very exhaustive battery of tests. It is essential to verify that the patient’s eye is healthy and that it meets the appropriate parameters so as not to put their vision at risk. If the requirements are met, LASIK retouching is usually the first choice for most ophthalmic surgeons.
Technological advances have made LASIK a very fast, safe and predictable procedure. Especially when combined with the femtosecond laser, this reduces the risks and greatly increases the accuracy of the treatment.
Retouching with ReLEx Smile
The patient should be aware that retouching with ReLEx Smile is not possible. This novel refractive surgery technique using femtosecond laser is only suitable for the first operation. If a patient operated on with ReLEx Smile is left with a residual refractive error, he or she will have to be retouched with LASIK or PRK, losing part of the advantages offered by ReLEx Smile.
Femtosecond laser LASIK touch-up outperforms blade LASIK
According to a study led by Dr. Güell, LASIK retouching with femtosecond laser can achieve better results in patients who have previously undergone LASIK surgery with a microkeratome blade.
By creating the new corneal flap or lenticule using femtosecond laser, mechanical trauma to the epithelium is reduced. In addition, the migration of epithelial cells is prevented, which reduces the risk of epithelial overgrowth, one of the worst complications in the LASIK touch-up operation as it can create irregular astigmatism and corneal opacities.
At Vistaláser clinics we offer the possibility of LASIK retouching with femtosecond laser. Make an appointment at your nearest centre, we are in Malaga, Marbella and Granada.
